Orial Font is a fancy typeface that was designed by Robert Norton, for the London publisher Thomas Thorpe. The first appearance of this Font was in an edition of Spenser’s Faerie Queene.
This Font is a direct descendant of William Caslon’s earlier typefaces, particularly Caslon Italic. However, it has a higher contrast between thick and thin strokes than Caslon, and the thinnest strokes are finer than those of his earlier typefaces.
The Font design is unusual for a typeface of that period in having no decorative elements such as fleurons or ligatures. It is a straightforward design, with horizontal stress and vertical stress, and little variation in stroke width within each letter.
This Font was widely used for printing books in the nineteenth century. It was also used for the first few years of the twentieth century, before being replaced by more modern typefaces.
